If you find that your hair gets oily within a day of washing, you have greasy/oily hair. In many ways, this is a good thing!
Oily hair is much healthier than dry hair. It’s just the visual that we want to get rid of.
The most important thing when figuring out how to get rid of greasy hair fast is keeping your treatment simple.
The last thing you want to do is shock your scalp.
How to Get Rid of Greasy Hair Fast
Keep your hair healthy by trying a few of the methods below. All of these greasy hair remedies are safe and natural.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar

This is a very popular greasy hair fix. Apple cider vinegar is cheap and easy to pick up at your local grocery store. The acid in apple cider vinegar balances the PH of your naturally slightly acidic hair. When your scalp’s PH is balanced, it will produce less oil.
Make sure to dilute your vinegar with 1 cup of water per 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar. You can use plain vinegar, the only huge difference is the smell. Apple cider vinegar has a gentler smell. All you do is pour this mixture over your hair in the shower. Massage into your roots and then rinse.
2. Beer

This is a pretty fun one. Beer, despite not being particularly healthy for your body, does have some very hair-friendly ingredients. Beer is rich in vitamin B, proteins, and sugars. It also contains silica, a mineral frequently used in volumizing hair products.

To start, get some beer out of your fridge. Beer for hair treatment should be warm and flat, so pop the top and let it sit for a while. Same as the apple cider vinegar rinse, just pour beer into your hair in the shower. You can dilute it if you’d like, but it’s not necessary because beer isn’t as strong.
3. Witch Hazel

Even though this ingredient is generally used in anti-acne skincare, it works wonders for oily hair. Apply witch hazel toner to your scalp with a cotton ball. The witch hazel balances PH and annihilates oil.
4. Egg Yolk

Eggs are full of proteins that have a positive effect on your hair. Most of these proteins are contained in the yolk. The egg whites remove the excess oil from your scalp. Egg hair masks are a super easy way to get rid of oily hair without drying it out.
Simply beat 2-3 eggs and add a small splash of milk and a tablespoon of olive oil and your egg mask is ready to go. Apply in the shower. Wait 15 minutes and rinse with cold water for best results.
Pro Tip: For extra oil reducing power, add a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Lemon juice contains citric acid which is great for oily hair.
5. Honey

Honey is a wonderful product that cleanses as well as moisturizes. So why recommend it for oily hair? Simple: honey-based hair masks make a wonderful conditioning substitute. If you have oily hair, commercial conditioners could amplify oil production. But, if you use a natural hair conditioner, you’ll get the same (or better) results! Honey is a perfect option for this because it’s not overly moisturizing and also has anti-bacterial properties.
My favorite simple honey-based hair mask is a banana-honey mask. First, blend up some bananas. I prefer a 1:4 ratio; that’s one part honey per four parts banana paste. Make as much as you need to cover your hair. Apply the mask to your hair and leave it on for about 10 minutes.
6. Oatmeal

This is a perfect hair treatment if you have also have itchy scalp or dandruff. Oatmeal is very calming to the scalp, relieving itch, nourishing gently and soaking up excess oil. Do an oatmeal mask every few weeks to keep your scalp feeling fresh.
Here’s an oatmeal mask recipe to get you started. Use whole oats, milk and olive or almond oil in equal parts. Mix thoroughly and apply to your dry hair. I’d recommend definitely doing this one in the shower! Leave the oatmeal mask on for 20-30 minutes and rinse thoroughly with shampoo and warm water.
Other Alternatives to Get Rid of Greasy Hair
Don’t feel like mixing a brew to get your hair under control? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are some more casual ways of getting rid of oily hair.
Oily hair shampoo
There are many shampoos made specifically for oily hair. Using these can also help you get a leg up on your troublesome hair. Most of the time these shampoos are formulated with acidic ingredients to help tame oil production. The most effective kind also make use of astringent herbs.
Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo often comes in a spray can, and consists mostly of oil-absorbing powder. Using dry shampoo in between washes can extend the life of your oil-free hair significantly. It’s not a replacement for shampoo, just a helpful addition. This stuff is a life-saver!
Brush your hair

When you brush your hair with a natural bristle brush you pull the oil from your scalp to the ends of your hair. This is a super easy tip for anyone with oily roots but dry ends. Get the oil where it needs to go!
Alternatively, if you do have root to tip oily hair you should brush your hair less. Over-brushing can stimulate oil-producing glands on the scalp.
Don’t straighten your hair

Straight hair tends to look greasy faster. This is because straight hair lays against the scalp much more than curly hair. Being in contact with the scalp so constantly allows straight hair to soak up too much oil. Consider forgoing the flat iron and your oily hair should fair much better. Luckily, curvier hair is in style. You don’t even have to worry about making a fashion faux pas.
