August is coming to a close and, of course, Chicago is hitting temps in the 90s.  I feel like this is the chance to wear my favorite summer dresses one last time before I “fallerize” them.

Just a warning…be prepared to see lots of this army green jacket.  It’s one of my favorites when the temps do dip.

And, I’m working on my layering again.  This time I’m using necklaces.  This black handmade necklace from Musana was a fun piece to mix with a red-beaded number that I grabbed a while back from The Antique and Resale Shoppe.  If you’re looking for a few new pieces for yourself, head over to Musana.  KUF readers have until the end of August to get a discount using the code APRIL20.  Not only do you deserve a little treat, but your purchase will also help women who are working on changing their lives for the better!!

This Musana necklace was last worn with a striped t-shirt and printed midi skirt.

The little white dress was last worn with a baseball hat and floral wedges.

With the anticipation of going back to school this week, I used last Friday for some “me” time.  My mother-in-law came over and watched the kids for a little, while I did some errands alone…including plopping myself down at the nail place for a mani and pedi.  I felt so refreshed after it all…sometimes you just gotta pamper yourself a little!!

Even though it feels great being a little self-centered, helping others (especially struggling mothers!) feels pretty darn good too. This past Mother’s Day, I worked with Musana Jewelry on a special project.  Musana empowers Ugandan women…artisans who make beautiful jewelry.  This Ssezibwa necklace that I’m wearing, was made by a Musana artisan.  It’s so beaufitul…no picture I took did justice to it!

During this month of August, I’m honored to be a brand ambassador for Musana!  You should check out all the beautiful pieces that they have to offer.  KUF readers can get a discount using code APRIL20.  Besides for this necklace, I also love the Safari Print necklace, the Bronze Bangle, and the Nkuba Earrings.  Each piece is handmade and helps support a great cause!

The Statement Necklace – 3 Ways

Last Wednesday I ordered this necklace from Accessory Mercado’s flash sale.  I love how it’s so colorful and bold…it’s like summer in a necklace!

Of course when it arrived in the mail, I had to spend a few minutes trying to incorporate it with my old stuff.  Over the weekend we have a birthday party to attend, so my mind was on party outfits.  Here’s a few ways I’m planning on breaking in this necklace…

With a necklace this flashy, I kept all my other pieces nice and simple…let the necklace do the eye-catching!

Just a couple of days left to speak your peace…I’ll be drawing 3 winners on Monday!  Enjoy the weekend!

Layering Necklaces: Summer Style

Layering Necklaces: Summer Style - Knocked Up Fabulous

I’m out with the flu today, so this little cutie is here to help me show you some of my favorite ways to layer necklaces for the summer.

In the cooler months, I have no problem layering on the big and bulky necklaces.  But that’s just too hot for summer! Summer is all about light layers!

One long necklace with a few shorter necklaces always look perfect.  I used a long safety-pin to add a little more length to one of the short necklaces.

When I have a detailed necklace, like this winged crown, I keep the other necklaces simple.  I also used a safety-pin on this winged crown necklace.  Instead of lengthening the chain, this time the pin shortened it.

Sometimes all I need are two long necklaces.  I usually pick two necklaces in a similar color…like these gold tone ones.

One last safety-pin trick…when I layer thin necklaces, I pin them all together in the back so that the clasps don’t spin around to the front.

Are you a fan of layering necklaces?  What are your favorite ways to wear them?

Every season seems to have its own uniform, or key pieces that are in constant rotation.  This spring I’m stocking my wardrobe full of graphic t-shirts, distressed denim, and delicate little necklaces.  A cute little moto jacket never hurts either.

What are your must-haves for spring??

Summer Tribal

03 Jul 2012 Permalink

Besides for my strange attraction to clothing from the 80′s, I also have a soft spot for tribal prints.  This blouse makes dressing during the summer easy…especially for the hot weather we’ve been having.  When the temps are consistently in the 90′s, simplicity is key!

Side note…I’m soooo glad I’m not pregnant right now!  This time last year I was having so many Braxton Hicks contractions, this heat would have been the end of me!

Favorite Pieces

28 Apr 2012 Permalink

I have a small interest in costume jewelry.  Ok.  Small might be an understatement.  I just keep a small amount out at a time so my husband doesn’t actually realize how much of this glitz is taking up our bedroom.  (Come to think of it…he supports this addiction!  He’s gotten me many of these pieces…he just doesn’t know what I pick up for myself).  Here’s what I have out in current rotation…and don’t ask me to pick a favorite!  That’s like asking which child of mine is my favorite…and right now they’re both making mama a little crazy with their crabbiness from their colds.  Too bad I can’t rotate them out like I do my jewelry.  Joking.  I love my kids.

These jeans have been my go to pair for Sunday lounging.  Rather than wearing them with my usual cozy sweater and flats, I switched it up a bit…a little tomboy with a touch of glam.  It’s fun to borrow from the men’s department…

Leftovers

11 Oct 2011 Permalink

My husband sometimes brings me home miscellaneous pieces of jewelry (he does work on foreclosed homes and gets dibs on things left behind…)  The beaded part of this necklace was from one of those homes.  I just added some ribbon and a brooch (also a foreclosed leftover) and a “new” necklace was made.  As I write this I feel a bit sad about having costume jewelry from someone who lost their home…but if they left it, I guess it wasn’t important to them, right?  Maybe if I thought of it as thrifting for free…nah…that makes me seem like a garbage picker…

Interested in seeing other pieces of leftovers?  Check out these brooches (and the ring).
