Balance and Simplicity

Balance and simplicity are two words that I’ve been incorporating into my everyday life.

Both in the classroom and at home, I’m working on showing my students and my two minis that there is a time for work, and a time for play. I guess you can say it’s the whole “work hard, play hard” mentality, but really it’s just common sense.

If you don’t balance out your life between work and play, you will begin to find yourself stressed out. It’s not healthy for your body to just focus on one of the two. There has to be an equilibrium.

Simplicity comes into play – for me at least – during times of stress or chaos. It’s calming to stop, take a step back, focus on just what’s important at the moment, and continue on from there.

Balance and simplicity are words that have also been describing my style recently. Take this outfit, for example. I love a great chunky sweater…but it can truly look overwhelming my petite 5’3″ frame. That’s when a simple – but adorable – layered necklace comes into play. This new arrival from Karine Sultan brings the right amount of balance to my fall outfit. And provides that little glam factor that I always look for.

Wow.  I’m feeling so old these days!  When I was in my twenties, I used to be able to go out at night and bounce back in the mornings. Not so much now!  After late nights this past Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and then getting up to be at Navy Pier at 7:30 on Saturday morning, I was (and still am) spent!!

It was all worth it though!  Especially the early morning on Saturday.  This weekend was the Chicago Toy & Game Fair at Navy Pier.  (The playCHIC fashion show was on Thursday.)  I dragged the family willingly along.  The kids had a blast, and we even got a little Christmas shopping done at the fair.

This outfit was perfect for checking out all the booths.  I went with a fun graphic t-shirt to get in the playful mood.  And the comfy cardigan and hands-free purse served their purpose.  The finishing touch was a bold red lip…you know, to help distract attention away from the bags under my eyes!

I have been reaching for way too much black and white recently.  It’s just so easy…

I did end up trying to incorporate more color into my outfits while I was planning for the week on Sunday.  (Yes.  I plan all my outfits for the week.  If I’m not organized, I fall apart.)  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can share those outfits soon!

I’m hoping this week goes by fast!  On Sunday I’m co-hosting a children’s clothing swap event.  It’s going to be super fun!  If you’re a Chicago reader, there’s a few tickets left.  (Click here to purchase.)  I hope to see you there!!

Gold

If you read my last post, then you know I’ve been having a bit of a moment with the color red.  (I really can’t stop wearing these shoes!)  Gold on the other hand, has always been a favorite of mine.  It’s one of those neutrals that plays well with just about all the other items in my closet.

On a sad (and shallow) note, my curling iron got destroyed.  Let’s just say using the tub as a place to cool off the styling tool wasn’t a good idea…just as it wasn’t a good idea for my husband to turn on the shower without looking inside the tub first.  Until I pick up a new one, I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to use my flat iron to add some curls and waves.  Uh…much harder than the YouTube video showed.  If you know how to curl hair with a flat iron, give me some tips!
