Closet Essential: Black Pencil Skirt

4 different ways to wear a pencil skirt...good ideas!

I know some people see getting dressed for work as a chore, but I love it.  One piece that I’m constantly grabbing from my closet is the pencil skirt.

The great thing about pencil skits is that they look flattering on all sorts of body types.  I have a few in black and also in some other colors.  They can be kept business casual, like I did here with a black and white short sleeve sweater and spring jacket, or they can bump up to business with a button down and fitted blazer.

Need a little more pencil skirt inspiration?  Here’s a few other ways to wear that I love…

  • A pencil skirt and a simple t-shirt and jean jacket.  So perfect for spring!  Tennis shoes can easily be swapped with the heels.
  • A printed pencil skirt and simple silk tank add some color to an otherwise easy outfit.
  • And here’s a link to the pink pencil skirt I mentioned above.  Wearing it with a fun gray tank and leather bomber jacket…this is one of my favorite looks.

black and white with an army jacket

For the record, I don’t always mean to look so ticked off in my outfit pictures.  Let’s blame this pout on the 20 degree temps or the strange old man who pulled up next to me as pictures were being taken.

Alright.  I’m done complaining.

Here’s a bunch of stuff that I’ve been up to…you know, to keep my mind off of the temps…and weird men…

Troy from Thriftanista in the City interviewed me (blush) for her 10 Questions for a Thriftanista series!  If you’re wondering why I thrift and how much of my closet is actually thrifted, you’ll have to click here to find out.  And if you’re local, Troy is putting together a party bus to take us thrifting!  (Woot woot!)  I’ve already gotten my ticket.  You can get yours here.

One cool thing about being the beauty contributor for Sassy Moms in the City, is that I get to try out loads of beauty products.  With winter killing my skin, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect lotion.  Well, the hunt has ended and AmLactin is my catch.  No joke, this brand has beaten out all others that I’ve tried.  You can find them at Target.  But, if you hurry up, you can still enter to win a basket filled with $75 worth of AmLactin goodies.  Head over here for a quick and easy entry.

And one last thing I’ll leave you with…

Wearing this diy necklace had me realizing that I haven’t done anything myself recently.  So, I actually made something over the weekend…something I really like.  I’ll be sharing on Friday.  See you then!

Hurry Up…Summer Is Almost Over!

August is coming to a close and, of course, Chicago is hitting temps in the 90s.  I feel like this is the chance to wear my favorite summer dresses one last time before I “fallerize” them.

Just a warning…be prepared to see lots of this army green jacket.  It’s one of my favorites when the temps do dip.

And, I’m working on my layering again.  This time I’m using necklaces.  This black handmade necklace from Musana was a fun piece to mix with a red-beaded number that I grabbed a while back from The Antique and Resale Shoppe.  If you’re looking for a few new pieces for yourself, head over to Musana.  KUF readers have until the end of August to get a discount using the code APRIL20.  Not only do you deserve a little treat, but your purchase will also help women who are working on changing their lives for the better!!

This Musana necklace was last worn with a striped t-shirt and printed midi skirt.

The little white dress was last worn with a baseball hat and floral wedges.

With two little ones, I’m always using some sort of hands-free bag.  And while a sturdy cross-body bag is my go-to, backpacks are making a scene once again.  I decided to give this simple dark brown one a try over the weekend…you might be seeing it during the week too.

What Does it Take to Represent ‘Real Women’?

Knocked Up Fabulous

Wallis is looking for their first US blogger ambassador.  I was excited when they contacted me about the contest…especially since the winner will be flown to London to be introduced as the new “face” of Wallisfashion.com.

They have a great design philosophy…design clothes that allow real women to look great.  I’d like to think that I’m a representative of that “real” woman…a woman who has a family, a career, and who enjoys looking her best each day without sacrificing that hard-earned paycheck on fashion.

Does that sound like someone who you’d want to represent you?  Head over to Facebook and give Knocked Up Fabulous a vote.

Whenever I put on a sweater these days I keep thinking this is going to be the last time I wear a sweater until the fall

Wishful thinking, right?

I’ve got a busy weekend this one and next (including a special birthday celebration!) so if mother nature is going to take it easy, I’m hoping it’s during the next 10 days!

Make sure that you enter this $1,000 giveaway!  I would love for a KUF reader to win!!

Getting a Little More Use From Those Summer Dresses

03 Oct 2012 Permalink

I have yet to prep my closet for fall and winter…you know, pack away all the summery stuff and unpack the bins of thick knits and warmer clothing.  Until then, I’ve been trying to make the most out of my summer dresses by pairing them with light sweaters or other layered pieces that I have available.

And if I procrastinate long enough, I can pair them with tights…for when the temps really start to drop.

Saturday Night Sushi

01 Oct 2012 Permalink

This past week was a long one and we’re all feeling a bit stressed and overwhelmed.  Thankfully the weather on Saturday was beautiful!  The kids and I spent a good part of the day playing outside, and I convinced my husband to take off work early and take the four of us to dinner.  Usually we cringe at the thought of eating in a restaurant with the kids, but dining al fresco is the way we do it.  (The kids sit much better eating outside than they do inside…go figure!)

With fresh air in my lungs and sushi in my belly, I feel ready to conquer another week!

Wedding in the Woods

20 Aug 2012 Permalink

On Saturday, my gorgeous cousin celebrated her marriage with an outdoor fiesta at her parents house.  The setting was beyond beautiful…large white tent, tiny lights and lanterns, plenty of delectable food…all under the stars!

I really debated over what to wear.  Being an outdoor party, I wanted my attire to be comfortable yet appropriate.  This LBD has been hanging in my closet for sometime…just waiting for a party.  And when I’m not sure what to wear, the LBD always wins.
